Focaccia Recipe

Focaccia is a classic Italian flatbread having a rich and flavourful taste. It is a great alternative to a garlic bread as it also contains a refreshing herby zing of rosemary. Comparable in texture and style to the pizza dough, Focaccia is used as a side to many dishes and is rich in carbohydrates comfort food. It can also be served as sandwich bread and you may experiment with fillings or patties to compliment the taste of rosemary and subtle garlic. While most garlic and Rosemary Focaccia use garlic powder, you can also use freshly minced garlic for a more pronounced flavour. Focaccia is drizzled with olive oil right before serving, so the holes in the flatbread soak the flavours perfectly. The topping of oregano, thyme, basil and sea salt flakes give this bread a beautiful multidimensional taste. Rosemary Focaccia is one of the most common types of flatbread in Italy. This bread is easy to make and uses ingredients that you most probably already have in your kitchen. You can make it in any shape you prefer, it’s only the texture of the flatbread that one has to be careful about. If you are new to making bread and especially using yeast, don’t worry. This recipe is easy to follow and you will learn how to start working with yeast in bread in a step by step manner. And if you were looking for a vegan bread, you will definitely love this bread!

All you need is-

  • 350 gm all purpose flour
  • 1 cup mozzarella
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoon rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon spice oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon spice basil
  • 1 teaspoon spice thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoon parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoon virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 dash black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt


Step 1  Knead A Sticky Dough

Combine salt, sugar, flour, yeast, oregano, half the rosemary, basil, thyme, black pepper with water and vegetable oil in a mixing bowl. Knead a soft and sticky dough.

Step 2  Pound And Knead Again A Soft Dough Using Vegetable Oil

Now, put the dough on a clean and dry surface after sprinkling some flour. Pound and knead a soft, elastic and smooth dough. Coat the bowl with oil and put in the dough while making sure it’s well coated with oil on all sides.

Step 3  Let The Dough Rise For 20 Minutes

Cover the dough with a damp and clean cloth. Let it rest at a warm place for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven for 230 degrees C (450 degrees F).

Step 4  Place The Dough In A Greased Baking Tray And Apply Cheese And Rosemary On It

Grease a baking tray. Knead the dough again and mould in a thick rectangle shape while making sure it is a half-inch thick. Brush with olive oil and poke holes on the surface. Sprinkle both the cheese, sea salt flakes and what is left of the rosemary.

Step 5  Bake The Bread For 15 Minutes

Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven until it turns golden brown. Drizzle some olive oil and serve warm.
