A Mumbai court on Monday issued summons to actor Kangana Ranaut after the city police informed it that an offence of defamation, as alleged by lyricist Javed Akhtar against the actor, is made out and further probe into it is required.
The Andheri metropolitan magistrate in December 2020 directed the Juhu police to conduct an inquiry into the complaint of defamation filed by Mr Akhtar against Ms Ranaut before the court in November last year.
The police on Monday submitted their report to the court, stating that offences alleged by the complainant (Javed Akhtar) against Ms Ranaut are made out for further investigation.
Magistrate R R Khan, after perusing the report, issued summons to Kangana Ranaut.
The court posted the matter for hearing on March 1.
Kangana has been alleging the existence of a ‘mafia’ in Bollywood that has been targeting her professionally and personally. She has claimed that Sushant was a victim of the same syndicate and was ‘murdered’ by them.
Last month, on Sushant’s birth anniversary, Kangana said that powerful people of Bollywood had ‘tortured’ him. She regretted assuming he was ‘strong enough’ to take on them on his own and not coming out in his support when he was alive.
“Geedaron ka ek jhund aur ek sherni… mazaa aayega (A pack of jackals and a lioness… this will be fun),” she wrote on Twitter.
Last December, the Andheri metropolitan magistrate directed the Juhu police to conduct an inquiry into Javed’s defamation complaint against Kangana before the court.
The police on Monday submitted their report to the court, stating that offences alleged by the complainant (Javed) against Kangana are made out for further investigation. Magistrate RR Khan, after perusing the report, issued summons to Kangana.
Last month, the court had recorded Akhtar’s statement. In his complaint, Akhtar has alleged that Ranaut had made defamatory statements on national and international television, “in what appears to be a clear campaign to malign and tarnish the reputation of the complainant (Akhtar) in the eyes of the general public”. It was submitted that Akhtar had contributed to the Indian film industry and had also been honoured with state honours like the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
He said that he was shocked to learn that on July 19, Ranaut had given an interview to a TV channel falsely attributing statements to him where Ranaut had also given her opinion on circumstances around the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput “without appearing to have any direct personal knowledge of the circumstances around his death”.
